| Introduction to CORE OrganicOrganic farming may offer a solution to a number of difficulties experienced in connection with the common agricultural policy (CAP), where a sustainable development of agriculture, environment and the rural districts are seen as key policy objectives.
However, in order to make full use of the perspectives in organic farming a comprehensive European research effort is needed. CORE Organic is a 3-year Coordination Action in organic food and farming. The overall objective has been to gather a critical mass and enhance quality, relevance and utilisation of resources in European research in organic food and farming. The final goal is to establish a joint research programme. Read leaflet on CORE Organic (PDF) CORE Organic initially comprises 11 partners, but has been open to include all European countries with a national research programme for organic food and farming. The programme is coordinated by the International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems, ICROFS. The project is initiated as a part of the European Commissions ERA-NET Scheme, which intends to step up cooperation between national research activities. In 2007, the first CORE Organic ERA-NET succesfully ended. The final scientific report is available here (pdf) and gives details on the activities and achievements of the project. CORE Organic launched 8 pilot projects which are running until 2010. These projects have each their own webside, which can be found under "research." The CORE Organic ERA-NET (European Research Area Network) has been succeeded by CORE Organic II, running from 2010. Read about CORE Organic II: www.coreorganic2.org.
